Argentina Invites Jeremy Browne to BA
The Embassy of Argentina in London announced on Friday 8th June that the Argentine Foreign Minister had sent a letter to the British Foreign Secretary William Hague, conveying an invitation to the Minister of State responsible for Latin America, Jeremy Browne, to visit Buenos Aires, on the occasion of his visit to the Malvinas Islands next 14th June. An unofficial translation of the letter sent to William Hague is below.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship
Buenos Aires, 8 June 2012
Dear Mr. Hague,
As you are aware, our two countries are members of important international organisations such as the United Nations where, in the next biennium, we will be sharing the high responsibility of being Security Council Members. At the same time, Prime Minister David Cameron and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will attend, in a few days, the G-20 Summit where they´ll be focusing on designing a strategy to mitigate the negative consequences on the citizens of the countries affected by the crisis which started in 2008.
Nonetheless, the constructive approach our leaders take on matters stemming from the responsibilities of a globalised world must not divert us from the important challenge of continuing to deepen our bilateral relations. Those relations go back to the first Peace Treaty signed in 1825, a few years after our country became independent and therefore free from colonial subjugation.
I am certain that you share these remarks, and with that in mind, I wish to convey an invitation to Minister Jeremy Browne to visit Buenos Aires, on the occasion of his visit to the Malvinas Islands.
As Sir Winston Churchill stated, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen”. We will always be willing to talk on what we believe is right but we also have the same disposition to sit down and listen.
The visit would also be an excellent opportunity for Mr. Browne to meet the British community, which is one of the oldest established communities in Argentina, composed of around 250,000 people, all committed to their trades and professions in every segment of the Argentine society.
Looking forward to your response,
Yours truly,
Signed: Héctor Timerman
